Mac Running Slow — How to Speed It Up

Category: macOS · Audience: Customers & Technicians · Est. time: 15–30 min

Summary

A sluggish Mac is usually short on memory, storage, or has a runaway app. These steps are safe and reversible.

Symptoms

  • Spinning beachball, apps slow to open
  • Fans loud, Mac hot
  • "Your disk is almost full" warnings

Solution

  1. Restart. Apple menu → Restart. Macs left sleeping for weeks accumulate memory pressure.
  2. Find the culprit. Open Activity Monitor (Spotlight → "Activity Monitor"). Check the CPU and Memory tabs, sort by usage, and note the top app. Quit anything runaway (select → ✕ → Quit).
  3. Check memory pressure. In Activity Monitor → Memory, look at the Memory Pressure graph. If it's regularly yellow/red, you have too many apps open or too little RAM — close browser tabs and unused apps.
  4. Free up storage. Apple menu → System Settings → General → Storage. Aim for 10–15% free. Use the recommendations (empty Trash automatically, review large files) and remove big items you don't need.
  5. Trim login items. System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions. Remove apps that don't need to launch at startup.
  6. Update macOS. System Settings → General → Software Update. Install updates and reboot.
  7. Empty the Trash and quit apps you're not using (a closed window doesn't quit an app on Mac — use ⌘Q).

If that doesn't work

  • Boot into Safe Mode (Apple Silicon: hold the power button → Options → hold Shift → "Continue in Safe Mode"; Intel: hold Shift at startup) to rule out third‑party login items/extensions.
  • A Mac with 8 GB RAM and lots of browser tabs is often just under‑resourced — recommend closing tabs or, on older Macs, an upgrade.
  • Escalate to BBN Support with the top CPU/Memory app from Activity Monitor.

Prevention

  • Keep 10–15% of the disk free; quit apps with ⌘Q; restart weekly.
