Setting Up a New PC / First Login

Category: New Starter Setup · Audience: New Starters & Technicians · Est. time: 20–45 min

Summary

How to get a new Windows 11 PC ready for work. Ideally BBN pre‑provisions the PC (imaged, joined, encrypted, apps installed) so you just sign in — but here's the full flow.

Best case — BBN pre‑provisioned (Autopilot / imaged)

  1. Connect to Wi‑Fi or Ethernet when prompted.
  2. Sign in with your work account (email + password) and approve MFA.
  3. The PC applies company settings/apps automatically (this can take a while on first login — leave it connected).
  4. Once at the desktop, confirm Outlook, Teams, OneDrive sign you in.

Manual first‑run (if not pre‑provisioned)

  1. Complete Windows setup; when asked, choose "Set up for work or school" and sign in with your work Microsoft 365 account + MFA.
  2. Install updates: Settings → Windows Update → check and install all, reboot.
  3. Sign in to apps: Outlook, Teams, OneDrive (turn on OneDrive backup for Desktop/Documents if that's your policy), and any browser sync.
  4. Printers, drives, VPN: add the office printer(s), map shared drives, import the VPN profile (see the relevant KB articles).
  5. Encryption: confirm BitLocker is on (Settings → Privacy & security → Device encryption / BitLocker). BBN normally enforces this — flag if it's off.

Move data from an old PC

  • Files usually live in OneDrive/SharePoint — signing in brings them back, no manual copy needed.
  • For anything local only on the old PC, copy it to OneDrive first, or ask BBN to assist with a migration. Don't leave the only copy on a device being retired.

If something's wrong

  • "Can't sign in / account not recognised" → the account or licence may not be ready; contact BBN Support.
  • Missing apps or access → raise a ticket referencing your role/what you need.

Prevention

  • Keep work files in OneDrive/SharePoint so a new PC is just a sign‑in away; confirm BitLocker + MFA on every device.
