Phone Won't Connect to Wi‑Fi or Mobile Data
Category: Mobile Devices · Audience: Customers & Technicians · Est. time: 5–15 min
Summary
Quick fixes for an iPhone or Android that won't get online over Wi‑Fi or mobile data.
Symptoms
- Won't join Wi‑Fi or shows "No Internet"
- No mobile data / no signal bars
- Connected but pages won't load
Solution
- Toggle Airplane mode. Turn Airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off. This re‑establishes both Wi‑Fi and mobile radios and fixes most one‑off drops.
- Restart the phone. A full power‑off and on clears stuck network states.
- Wi‑Fi: forget and rejoin.
- iPhone: Settings → Wi‑Fi → ⓘ next to the network → Forget This Network, then reconnect.
- Android: Settings → Network & internet → Wi‑Fi → the network → Forget, then reconnect.
- Mobile data checks. Ensure Mobile Data is On (Settings → Mobile/Cellular). Confirm you have signal and haven't hit a data cap. Try toggling data off/on.
- Update the phone. Install pending iOS/Android updates — carrier and network fixes ship in them.
- Reset network settings (last resort). This clears saved Wi‑Fi passwords, so have them handy.
- iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
- Android: Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi‑Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
If that doesn't work
- Wi‑Fi only: test another device on the same network; if all fail, restart the router.
- Mobile data only: check the carrier isn't having an outage; try the SIM in another phone.
- Escalate to BBN Support (Wi‑Fi/work resources) or your mobile carrier (mobile data/signal).
Prevention
- Keep the phone's OS updated; note your Wi‑Fi passwords before a network reset.
