Bluetooth Not Working or Won't Pair on Windows 11
Category: Windows 11 · Audience: Customers & Technicians · Est. time: 10–20 min
Summary
Bluetooth devices (mice, keyboards, headsets) that won't pair or keep dropping are usually fixed by re‑pairing or a driver refresh.
Symptoms
- Bluetooth toggle is missing from Settings
- Device won't pair or shows "Couldn't connect"
- Audio/headset keeps disconnecting
Solution
- Confirm Bluetooth is on. Settings → Bluetooth & devices → ensure Bluetooth is On. If the toggle is missing entirely, jump to step 5.
- Put the device in pairing mode. Most devices need a button held until the light flashes. Check the device manual — pairing usually times out after ~2 minutes.
- Remove and re‑pair. Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices → find the device → ⋯ → Remove device, then Add device → Bluetooth and pair fresh.
- Check the battery. Low battery in a mouse/headset causes drop‑outs that look like a Windows fault. Charge or replace batteries.
- Restart the Bluetooth service (Technician). Search Services → Bluetooth Support Service → right‑click → Restart (set Startup type to Automatic).
- Run the troubleshooter. Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Bluetooth → Run.
- Refresh the driver (Technician). Device Manager → Bluetooth → right‑click the adapter → Update driver. If still broken, Uninstall device and reboot to let Windows reinstall it.
If that doesn't work
- Move the device closer and away from Wi‑Fi routers/USB‑3 hubs, which cause 2.4 GHz interference.
- Test the device on a phone/another PC to confirm it's not faulty.
- On desktops, a cheap USB Bluetooth dongle is a reliable fix if the built‑in adapter is failing.
- Escalate to BBN Support with the device make/model.
Prevention
- Keep only the devices you use paired — a long list can cause conflicts.
