Hikvision: A Camera Is Offline or Black on the NVR

Category: CCTV (Hikvision) · Audience: Customers & Technicians · Est. time: 10–25 min

Summary

When one camera shows black, "No Video," or a connection icon on the NVR while others are fine, it's almost always power, cabling, or the camera itself — not the whole system.

Symptoms

  • One channel shows black / "No Resource" / a red connection icon
  • Camera missing from the live grid
  • "Network unreachable" for that channel

Solution

  1. Note which camera and whether it's just one. One offline camera = local (power/cable/camera). All cameras offline = the NVR or its network/power (different problem — check the NVR).
  2. Check power. Most Hikvision cameras are PoE (powered over the network cable from the NVR's built‑in PoE ports or a PoE switch). No power = black. Look for a link light at the camera.
  3. Reseat the network cable at both ends (camera and the NVR/switch PoE port). A loose or water‑ingressed outdoor connector is the #1 cause.
  4. Try a different PoE port on the NVR/switch. If the camera comes back on another port, the original port/injector is faulty.
  5. Power‑cycle the camera. Unplug its network cable for 20 seconds and reconnect (this also power‑cycles PoE cameras).
  6. Check the channel config (Technician). On the NVR: Configuration → System → Camera Management — is the channel's IP/status correct? Re‑add or re‑activate the camera if it dropped out. Confirm the camera got an IP.
  7. Weather/damage check. Outdoor cameras suffer from water in the connector, cut cables, or a failed camera after storms.

If that doesn't work

  • Swap the suspect camera with a known‑good one on the same cable/port to isolate camera vs cabling.
  • All cameras black → check the NVR power, HDMI/monitor, and the NVR itself (see remote‑view article for NVR‑level checks).
  • Escalate to BBN Support with which camera, since when, and whether it's one or many.

Prevention

  • Weatherproof outdoor connectors; keep spare PoE ports; label channels to camera locations.
