Hikvision: Reset a Forgotten NVR/DVR or Camera Password
Category: CCTV (Hikvision) · Audience: Technicians · Est. time: 15–30 min
Summary
Hikvision devices can't be "cracked" — resetting a forgotten admin password uses Hikvision's official verification (via the SADP tool or Hik‑Connect). This is a technician task and requires proof of ownership.
⚠️ Ownership required. Hikvision password reset requires the device serial and (depending on firmware) an export/import verification or a secure code. Only perform this for a device you/BBN manage.
Method 1 — SADP tool (on‑site / same network)
- Install the SADP tool (Hikvision) on a laptop on the same LAN as the device.
- SADP lists the device — select it. Click Forgot Password.
- Depending on firmware:
- Export/Import: export an XML request file, send it to Hikvision (or use the authorised reset service via BBN's Hikvision account), receive a response file, import it, and set a new password. *(Older method also used a per‑day security code.)*
- GUID / secure code: use the pre‑exported GUID file or the security‑question answers if configured.
- Set a strong new password and record it in BBN's password vault.
Method 2 — Hik‑Connect (if the device is bound to an account)
- If the NVR is linked to a Hik‑Connect account, you can often reset the device password from within Hik‑Connect after verifying the account.
Method 3 — Camera behind an NVR
- A PoE camera managed by the NVR usually inherits the NVR's password. Reset/verify at the NVR first; the NVR can push credentials to its cameras (Camera Management → activate/one‑touch).
Important
- There is no universal backdoor and no legitimate "master password." Anyone offering one is a security risk. Use only the official Hikvision reset via SADP/Hik‑Connect.
- Very old firmware has known reset limitations — update firmware where possible after regaining access.
If that doesn't work
- Escalate to BBN Support — we can run the reset through BBN's authorised Hikvision channel with the device serial/proof of ownership.
Prevention
- Store the CCTV admin credentials in BBN's password vault; set security questions / a reset GUID at install; keep firmware current.
