Hikvision: Play Back and Export CCTV Footage
Category: CCTV (Hikvision) · Audience: Customers & Technicians · Est. time: 10–25 min
Summary
How to find, review, and export recorded footage from a Hikvision NVR/DVR — for an incident, insurance, or Police request.
⚖️ For Police/legal requests, export the original clip (not a phone video of the screen) and note the date, time, and camera. Keep the export secure and log who you gave it to.
Play back on the NVR (local monitor + mouse)
- Right‑click → Menu → Playback (or the Playback icon).
- Select the camera(s) and the date on the calendar (days with recordings are highlighted).
- Drag the timeline to the time you want; use the speed controls to scrub. Coloured bars show recording types (continuous vs motion/event).
Export a clip (NVR)
- In Playback, set the start and end of the clip (scissors/clip markers, or use Export → by time).
- Insert a USB drive into the NVR.
- Choose Export, select the camera(s) and time range, pick the USB device, and export. Prefer the native/original format (best for evidence) or MP4 if the recipient needs a standard player.
- Hikvision often bundles a player on the export — include it so the recipient can open native files.
Play back / export remotely
- Hik‑Connect app: open the camera → timeline → play back; some versions allow a clip download to the phone.
- iVMS‑4200 (desktop): Remote Playback → search by time → Download/Clip the segment to the PC (best for larger exports over the VPN).
If you can't find footage
- Check the date/time is correct on the NVR — a wrong clock means footage is filed under the wrong time.
- Recording gaps: the camera may have been offline, on motion‑only recording, or the HDD full/overwriting shortened retention. Check HDD status and recording schedule.
- Retention: older footage is auto‑overwritten once the disk is full — retrieve incidents promptly.
If that doesn't work
- Escalate to BBN Support with the camera, date, and exact time window — we can export it for you.
Prevention
- Keep the NVR clock synced; monitor HDD health/retention; grab incident footage quickly before it's overwritten.
