Access the UniFi Network Controller & Guest Wi‑Fi Basics
Category: Networking (UniFi) · Audience: Technicians · Est. time: 10–20 min
Summary
Where the UniFi controller lives, how to reach it, and the basics of the guest network. BBN typically manages the controller centrally — customers should contact BBN for changes.
Where the controller runs
UniFi is managed from one of:
- A UniFi OS Console — Cloud Key (UCK), Dream Machine (UDM/UDM‑Pro/UDR), or Dream Wall — reached at
https://<console-ip>or via unifi.ui.com (remote access). - A self‑hosted/hosted controller (software on a server) — reached at
https://<controller-ip>:8443.
Access it
- Remotely (recommended): sign in at unifi.ui.com with the Ubiquiti SSO account that owns the console. You'll see the site and can open UniFi Network.
- Locally: browse to
https://<console-ip>(UniFi OS) orhttps://<controller-ip>:8443(software), accept the certificate warning, and sign in with the local admin credentials. - Don't have access? Contact BBN Support — controller access is restricted for security.
Guest Wi‑Fi basics (Technician)
- In UniFi Network → Settings → WiFi, guest SSIDs are separate networks flagged as Guest.
- Guest network / hotspot policy (Settings → Networks / Hotspot 2.0 / Guest Control) controls the captive portal, password/voucher, and client isolation (guests can't see each other or the internal LAN — keep this on).
- Guest can't get internet: check the guest SSID is enabled, the captive portal auth is correct, and the guest VLAN has a working DHCP scope + internet route.
Common tasks (usually via BBN)
- Change a Wi‑Fi password, add an SSID, create guest vouchers, or adjust VLANs — these affect the whole site, so raise a ticket with BBN Support rather than changing live.
If that doesn't work
- Can't reach the console at all → it may be offline/rebooting, or its IP changed; check on‑site or with BBN.
- Escalate to BBN Support for controller access or any network change.
Prevention
- Keep client isolation on for guest Wi‑Fi; document the console IP + SSO owner with BBN.
