Summary

On a UniFi network, slow or dropping Wi‑Fi is usually coverage, interference, or an access point (AP) that needs attention. Basic checks first; deeper changes are a BBN job in the UniFi Controller.

Symptoms

  • Wi‑Fi slow only in certain areas
  • Devices disconnect and reconnect
  • One AP's area is dead while others are fine

Solution (customer / first checks)

  1. Reboot test. Restart the affected device (phone/laptop) and, if easy/authorised, power‑cycle the UniFi AP (PoE — unplug the network cable at the switch for 20s, or use the switch's power). *Only if BBN has OK'd you doing this.*
  2. Check coverage. Note where it's bad. A single dead area usually means an AP is offline or out of range — not the whole network.
  3. Reduce interference. Microwaves, cordless phones, and lots of neighbouring Wi‑Fi crowd the 2.4 GHz band. Where possible, connect to the 5 GHz network for speed.
  4. Count the devices. A cheap AP struggles past ~30–50 busy clients. If a space is packed, mention it to BBN — it may need another AP.

Technician checks (UniFi Controller)

  1. In the UniFi Network app/controller → Devices, confirm all APs are Online (not "Disconnected"/"Adopting"). Re‑provision any that are stuck.
  2. UniFi Insights / clients: check per‑AP client counts, retry rates, and channel utilisation. High utilisation on a channel = interference/overload.
  3. Channels: avoid auto if the RF is messy — set non‑overlapping 2.4 GHz channels (1/6/11) and appropriate 5 GHz channels/width (80 MHz in clean RF, 40 MHz if congested).
  4. Firmware: update AP firmware and the controller during a maintenance window.
  5. Min RSSI / band steering: enable band steering to push capable devices to 5 GHz; tune Min RSSI to stop clients clinging to a distant AP.

If that doesn't work

  • A consistently dead area usually means a coverage gap — recommend an additional AP or relocation.
  • Escalate to BBN Support with where it's bad, when (all day vs busy periods), and which devices.

Prevention

  • Keep UniFi firmware current; review AP placement/count as the office grows.
