100% CPU or Disk Usage on Windows 11

Summary

The PC is loud, hot, and slow because something is pinning the CPU or disk at 100%. Task Manager tells you what — then you target it.

Symptoms

• Fans loud, PC hot and sluggish
• Task Manager shows CPU or Disk at 90–100%

Solution

1. Find the culprit. Right‑click the taskbar → Task Manager → Processes. Click the CPU column to sort, then the Disk column. Note the top process.
2. If it's a normal task, wait it out. These commonly spike right after boot or an update and settle within ~10–15 minutes:

• Antimalware Service Executable (Defender scan)
• Windows Modules Installer / TiWorker (installing updates)
• Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry, SearchIndexer (indexing)

1. If it stays pinned, act on that process.

• A specific app at 100% → close and reopen it; check for an update.
• A browser at 100% → close heavy tabs/extensions.

1. Check for malware. Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Quick scan. A process with a random name using 100% CPU is a red flag.
2. Finish pending updates. Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install all, reboot. Half‑applied updates cause lingering high usage.
3. Rebuild the search index (Technician), if SearchIndexer is stuck. Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows → Advanced indexing options → Advanced → Rebuild.
4. Disk 100% classic fixes (Technician). Disable SysMain (Superfetch) and Windows Search services temporarily to confirm; on old HDDs this is often just the drive being overwhelmed.

If that doesn't work

• On a spinning HDD, chronic 100% disk usage is usually the hardware — recommend an SSD upgrade.
• Escalate to BBN Support with the name of the process pinning CPU/Disk in Task Manager.

Prevention

• Keep Windows updated and reboot weekly so background maintenance completes.
