Outlook Won't Open or Keeps Crashing on Windows 11
Category: Windows 11 · Audience: Customers & Technicians · Est. time: 10–30 min
Summary
Outlook that won't start, hangs on "Processing", or crashes is usually fixed by Safe Mode, add‑in checks, or a profile repair.
Symptoms
- Outlook hangs on the splash/"Processing" screen
- Crashes on launch or when opening a message
- "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window."
Solution
- Fully close Outlook. Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → end any Outlook processes, then reopen.
- Start in Safe Mode. Hold Ctrl while launching Outlook, or press Win + R and run
outlook.exe /safe. If it opens in Safe Mode, an add‑in is the cause. - Disable add‑ins. File → Options → Add‑ins → (Manage: COM Add‑ins) Go → untick all → OK → restart Outlook normally, re‑enabling one at a time to find the culprit.
- Repair the Office installation. Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft 365/Office → ⋯ → Modify → Quick Repair (then Online Repair if needed).
- Reset the navigation pane. Win + R →
outlook.exe /resetnavpane(fixes many "won't open" cases). - Repair the mail profile (Technician). Control Panel → Mail (Microsoft Outlook) → Show Profiles → create a new profile, set it as default, and reconfigure the account. For classic .pst/.ost corruption, run ScanPST (
SCANPST.EXE). - Rebuild the OST (Technician). For Exchange/M365, close Outlook and rename the
.ostfile (in%localappdata%\Microsoft\Outlook) to.old; Outlook rebuilds it on next launch.
If that doesn't work
- Try Outlook on the web (outlook.office.com) to confirm the mailbox itself is healthy.
- Check whether it affects new Outlook vs classic Outlook — try toggling the "New Outlook" switch.
- Escalate to BBN Support with the exact error text and whether Safe Mode works.
Prevention
- Keep Office updated; avoid installing unknown Outlook add‑ins.
